Eastern Redbud

Cercis canadensis
A small  tree with a flush of lovely pink flowers in the spring. It develops smooth heart-shaped leaves and turns bright yellow in the fall. Because it is fast growing, tolerant, and compact, it's a great tree for small spaces and poor soil. Although it is a legume, the redbud is not known to associate with N-fixing bacteria.

We collect our seeds from native stock. This species is a stubborn germinator, so our germination percent isn't guaranteed. We carefully sort and then pre-treat the seeds by stratifying and nicking them - yes each redbud seed. There are 4 in each seed ball.  Any more and that runs the risk of over crowding too high and the germinators will compete. Best planted in the fall, for spring germination. Please note we include more in the packs to help account for lower germination rates.

The rewards of seed-balling this tree are fantastic. Once established, they produce abundant seed and spread through re-seeding quite effectively. It certainly reseeds happily in my clayey soil!
