Blue Grama Grass

Bouteloua gracilis
Blue Grama Grass is known for its resilience. It is a short (up to 18”, but usually closer to 8”) perennial grass that can withstand the bitter cold continental winters and the parched summers in the South Central Prairies.

Blue Grama has a distinctive one-sided inflorescence, which can take on a crescent shape as it matures and ripens. When young, it has a purplish blush.

It has a dense mat of fine, shallow roots, which aid in the rapid uptake of rainwater and reducing surface erosion. Unfortunately, this grass does not tolerate disturbance, especially plowing that disrupts its root system.

Blue Grama is best established in areas where there is not a lot of competition for moisture from other more mature plants with established root systems.
