Prairie Brome
Prairie Brome is a sensitive perennial grass found in undisturbed prairies in the north central and north eastern US and Canada. It is also known as Wild Chess. It can reach about two-feet tall and has drooping, often fuzzy flowerheads. Sparrows and small rodents often feed on the seeds.
Prairie Brome prefers dry-mesic conditions in prairies and also spring-fed wetlands. It is sensitive to disturbance and is endangered or extirpated in some of its native range.
Although generally an upland species, it can be grown in some fen-type wetlands.
